Looking for Band Supporters
May 13, 2006

Each year the Band Staff and Alumni Association work to bring some "extras"
to the members of the Band.  Last year, through the assistance of Alums
Robert Gardner, DDS and Evan Botkin of Jimmy Johns Subs, the Band was
treated to a fabulous treat during the nightly fireworks.  The Beck Center for
the Arts publishes the annual address book and Royalton Music Center
provided pens.

How can you help? Here are a few ideas:
Provide funds for a pizza party.
Donate cool handouts - t-shirts, pens, hats, and other trinkets.
Provide funds for an ice cream party.

We are open to any ideas for adding to "Fun at the Fair" for the members
while they are away from home.  Check out the
supporters page and contact
the staff at to discuss ideas and see how you can make a

First Marching Rehearsal
Monday, July 31, 2006

Last night the band members received a visit from the tooth fairy...Band Alum
Rob Gardner, DDS, donated toothbrushes and toothpaste to all the band
members to ensure proper dental hygiene during the fair!

The students practiced their first day of marching in unit bands outside around
the fairgrounds.  Newcomers learned the famous "Fred" step, and practiced to
the traditional AOSFB cadences.

The day came to an end with sectional rehearsals and the full band rehearsal
on the Rhodes Center lawn concert area.
Family Photo Day
Tuesday, August 1, 2006

This morning marked the official band photo for the 2006 All-Ohio State Fair
Band. The Band marched to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
(ODNR) to have long time friend of the Band, Barry Conrad, take the annual
photograph.  These group pictures are currently still available to order in the
AOSFB General Store.

Unit bands, Red Band and Black Band, rehearsed in different areas of the
fairgrounds, including the Main Street Stage, Janis Center, ODNR, etc.  The
weather in Columbus is hot, hot, hot, so band members are encouraged to
drink plenty of water, carry their water bottles with them, and cool off in their
free time.
Opening Day
Wednesday, August 2, 2006

Welcome to the 2006 Ohio State Fair!  The AOSFB had its first performance
today leading Governor Taft around the fairgrounds to celebrate different
areas of the fair prior to the Opening Ceremonies at 11:00am in Central Park.
The All-Ohio State Fair Band and All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir
represented the talented youth of Ohio by entertaining fairgoers and were the
highlight of the morning ceremonies.

The Band then headed over to the Ferris Wheel to play for the world's largest
wedding, fair-style.  Twenty  couples renewed their vows while riding on the
Ferris Wheel, and competed for a chance to win a second honeymoon.

The Band also marched in the first Daily Parade this afternoon.  Several
members represented the Band on the All-Ohio State Fair Band float in the
parade, and different students will have the opportunity each day to ride the
float and wave their flags to fairgoers.

Long time friend and Band photographer, Barry Conrad, met students this
morning to take their individual photos near the traditional spruce tree as
representatives of this year's AOSFB.

Just a reminder to family that if the students would like a large group photo
that was taken earlier in camp, there is still time to order one.  Students may
order the group photo at the AOSFB General Store through Tuesday, 8/8.
Extra photos will be available for purchase after all orders are filled and while
supplies last (please note: quantities will be limited)..
Alumni Day, Alumni Day!
Sunday, August 6, 2006

Today was the annual AOSFB Alumni Day where all alumni from the
All-Ohio organizations (including the All-Ohio Boys' Band, the All-Ohio State
Fair Youth Symphony, the All-Ohio Girls' Band, and the All-Ohio State Fair
Band) join in reminiscing their years in the Band and playing traditional
AOSFB literature including the Stars and Stripes Forever.  After a morning
rehearsal, the Alumni Band was ready to bally-hoo around the fairgrounds
under the direction of Alumni Band Director, James "Tank" Esswein.

Alumni then enjoyed another fantastic headlining performance of the combined
2006 All-Ohio State Fair Band and All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir in the
Celeste Center.  The groups performed individual selections as well as
combined pieces for an audience of thousands.  The Band's musical selections
were also recorded for the annual CD.

Both the Alumni Band and the 2006 AOSFB marched as their own units in
the daily parade in the afternoon, and past alumni were seen waving from the
AOSFB float.  After a quick dinner, the 2006 Band rode buses to the
Whetstone Park of Roses in Columbus for the Civitan Club's Summer
Concert Series.  Special thanks to the Civitan Club for providing the Band
water after the concert, and to the Pozderac family (including Sarah
2001-2005 and Jon 2005-2006) for providing healthy snacks of apples and
oranges for all band members.
Singing in the Rain...
Monday, August 7, 2006

Yes, the band members were doing their annual rain dances as gray skies
covered the fairgrounds.  All members were looking for a break from the heat,
and the rain finally came after the afternoon performances, leading up to a
cancelled parade due to weather.

The free time gave the students the opportunity to enjoy the skyride ticket and
official 2006 State Fair collector pins given to each student earlier
compliments of the Ohio Expo Center and Ohio State Fair.

However, the evening concert did go on after the scattered rain disappeared,
and the fairgoers enjoyed the music on the East lawn of the Rhodes Center.

One more note, the Red Band had a real treat this afternoon as candidate for
governor, Kenneth Blackwell, conducted the group on Stars and Stripes
forever in the Ag & Hort Bldg.
AOSFB Featured in Fabulous Articles
Tuesday 8-15-06

The All-Ohio State Fair Band was featured in two wonderful newspaper
articles during the 2006 Ohio State Fair.

The first article appeared in the
Toledo Blade on Sunday, August 6. Journalist
Jane Schmucker spent ample time with several Band members and Mr.
Santa-Emma as she took an in depth look all aspects of the All-Ohio State
Fair Band.

The second article was written by Jill Gosche and appeared in The

AOSFB Performs for the Inauguration of Ohio's 68th Governor
Sunday 1-14-07

The All-Ohio State Fair Band, along with the Cardinal Choral of the All-Ohio
State Fair Youth Choir, had the high honor of performing for the Inauguration
of Gov. Ted Strickland and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher.  The public event was held
on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse on January 13th.  The chilly and rainy
weather did not chase away the large crowd - or dampen the enthusiasm of
the Band members.

Beginning at 8:45 am on the 13th, just over 100 members of the Band
gathered in the DiSalle Center - home of Arts & Crafts exhibits during the
Fair. After check-in each performer receievd their music from last summer and
a raincoat for protection from the elements.  Reheasal began at 9:15 and
lasted until 10:10 when the Band boarded the buses for The Statehouse.

At the Statehouse, the Band and Choir entertained the attendess with 30
minutes of music leading up to the Inaugural Ceremonies.  Band members
provided fanfares throughout the ceremony to highlight key moments.  The
final portion of the program came to a close with sounds tat are quite familiar .
. . The Choir performing
The Battle Hymn of the Republic and The Band
The Stars and Stripes Forever.

Many thanks to the Strickland/Fisher Inauguration Committee for extending
the invitation, Deborah Hochbein of Special Events of The Ohio Expo Center
& State Fair for working through many details, the maintenance staff for
preparing the rehearsal space, the Band staff for volunteering time to make it
all work, the Choir members and staff for continuing to be great partners and
of course to the Band members and their families for making the trip,
performing well, and representing the All-Ohio State Fair Band in a most
positive manner!
